CHAIRMAN’S STATEMENT

Commissioning of the new workshop buildings and equipment under the project "Economic Empowerment of the Gambian Youth Through Capacity Building in The Gambia in the Field of Creating Job Opportunities" funded by the Spanish government on 33rd July 2009.

The year 2009 (as in the previous year) had been characterised by a further expansion of the Institute and a number of successes and achievements.

The increase in professional staff was about 5% and all together 146 in 2009 as compared to 139 in 2008. The professional staffs were engaged in developing students in various fields. The Institute had an overall staff capacity of 249 in 2009 including Professional, Administration, Support and Ancillary of full-time regular and part-time. The Board of Governors would like to register its profound gratitude to the Government of the Republic of the Gambia through the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology for increasing the GTTI subvention to meet its operational cost from 28% in 2008 to 31% in 2009. Although as reported last year further growth will only be possible to sustain if the subvention budget granted to the Institute is increase to match the corresponding increase in staff and student size and the importance of the Institute in developing and producing the middle and sub-professional levels of the human resources requirements of the Gambian economy.

The successes registered during the period under review could not have been achieved without employing stringent measures on the judicious use of resources and a cost effective, reliable delivery. A major element, however, was and remains the support given by numerous friends and partners of the Institute, to whom we would like to express our sincere gratitude. In particular, these thanks goes to our line ministry – the Permanent Secretary and staff of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, the Honourable Minister of Basic and Secondary Education and her staff, our Local and International partners.

Our sincere gratitude is extended to the Director General, her Management Team Staff and all Students of the Gambia Technical Training Institute for their tremendous commitment.

A significant contribution to the successes achieved by the Institute is embodied by its staff whose skill and engagement guarantee GTTI`s high level of professionalism and the National and International recognition enjoyed by the Institute.

We trust that this report will give you a broad idea of the spectrum of our work and that you will be able to derive from it a variety of ideas for activities to be pursued together.
